Athonet, VMware and HARMAN demonstrate 5G-ready mobile edge computing capabilities at MWC 2017

27th February 2017 – There is an ever-increasing number of sophisticated users who are waiting for mobile networks that can support massive edge computing applications and deliver low latency, local break-out, security and resilience on affordable yet simple-to-deploy IT based platforms. At Mobile World Congress 2017, Athonet and VMware are displaying how they can meet those highly demanding needs today by disaggregating elements of Athonet’s “softwarized” mobile core network and deploying in real-time with the VMware vCloud NFV platform. For example, Athonet, VMware and HARMAN are showcasing a live connected car IoT scenario. Elements of Athonet’s click-to-deploy “softwarized” mobile core are disaggregated (Control/User Plane) and deployed in real-time with VMware vCloud NFV to allow high performance LTE services to be delivered to the dashboard of a car running a video entertainment hub framework. This allows for the local breakout of video and other communications for local edge computing requirements and can deliver the highly secure, ultra-low latency required by high-bandwidth applications. HARMAN IoT solutions bring connectivity, digital content, emergency services and policy control to the connected car.
