Athonet’s mobile core was conceived in 2005 and saw its first deployment as early as 2010, making it one of the first virtual mobile core deployments in the world.

In May 2012, two major earthquakes occurred in Northern Italy causing widespread damage and homelessness while fixed and mobile networks were overloaded or damaged. Within hours, the Italian Civil Protection had installed the Athonet network, utilizing it for real-time fixed video surveillance, “wearable” mobile video and voice communications to/from field emergency personnel as well as providing free WiFi access for civilians.

Today Athonet’s solutions are deployed by mobile network operators, public safety organisations and enterprise customers across the world.
